UNU-IAS Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme

In April 1996, the UN Secretary–General inaugurated UNU-IAS as an in–house community of scholars mandated to research issues located at the intersection between societal and natural systems. The Institute’s mission is to advance knowledge and to promote learning for policy making to meet the challenges of sustainable development. As an advanced studies institute, UNU-IAS is forward-looking and multidisciplinary.

Since October 2000, UNU-IAS offers Postdoctoral Fellowships for recent PhD graduates to provide them with the opportunity to put the knowledge and expertise acquired during their doctoral research to practical policy-relevant use. So far, over 40 Fellows from some 20 countries have passed through the Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme. Of those completing the programme about one third have been women, and developing country participants have outnumbered developed country participants.
Around two Postdoctoral Fellowships are awarded each year for a period of 12 months, starting in September.
The Fellowship Programme provides the successful applicant with a unique opportunity to:
  • develop and advance their research under the supervision of a UNU-IAS faculty member and contribute to the overall research agenda of the Institute;
  • widen their research interests and professional networks by working in the international and multi-disciplinary context of UNU-IAS, and with its wider network of Japanese universities and research institutes, as well as international collaborators;
  • become exposed to the workings of the international and multilateral policy process and the broader UN system; and
  • link with other UNU-IAS and UNU-ISP PhD and Postdoctoral Fellows.
The Fellows are resident at UNU-IAS in Yokohama or UNU-IAS OUIK in Kanazawa, Japan for the full term of the fellowship. This gives them the opportunity to gain from the broader research programme of lectures, seminars, workshops and conferences arranged by UNU-IAS. The Institute's close links with Japanese affiliated professors and visiting professors from key universities and think tanks in Japan also allow Fellows to link into the broader Japanese academic and research community.

2. Field of Research

The purpose of the UNU-IAS Postdoctoral Fellowship is to provide young scholars and policy-makers, especially from the developing world, with a multidisciplinary context within which to pursue advanced research and training that are of professional interest to the applicant and of direct relevance to the research agenda of UNU-IAS. Research proposals for UNU-IAS Postdoctoral Fellowships should therefore relate clearly to one of the current research areas of the Institute, as well as aim to be policy-relevant. Research proposals are invited in the following areas:
Science and Technology for Sustainable Societies
Sustainable Urban Futures
Biodiplomacy Initiative
Sustainable Development Governance
Traditional Knowledge Initiative
Marine/Coastal Governance and Urban Biodiversity (UNU-IAS OUIK)
3. Eligibility and Conditions

Applicants must have obtained a PhD (or at least successfully defended their doctoral dissertation), in an area broadly associated with the UNU-IAS thematic focus, prior to the application deadline. Language proficiency in English is essential. Applicants from developing countries and women are particularly encouraged to apply.

UNU-IAS Postdoctoral Fellowships are awarded for a period of 12 months. The starting date of the Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme is 1 September. Successful applicants are required to be in Yokohama or Kanazawa by this date. Residency in Yokohama or Kanazawa for the full duration of the fellowship is required.

Fellows are provided with their own desk in a dedicated study room in the Institute, administrative support and desktop computing. Fellows have access to the UNU Library in Tokyo which includes an excellent collection of UN documents. They also have access via the UNU Library to various Japanese university libraries and computer databases. A limited range of other, more specialized computer hardware and software may also be available.

The fellowship provides a monthly stipend of JPY300,000- 360,000 (depending on experience) from which a monthly usage charge for accommodation is deducted (see below). A one-time-only settle-in-allowance of JPY 80,000 will be granted to each Fellow at the beginning of the programme for relocation, adjustment expenses, ground transportation and incidental costs. UNU-IAS provides Fellows with a return air ticket between his/her country of residence and Narita Airport. Settle-in-allowance and air tickets are, however, not provided for Fellows already residing in Japan before the commencement of the fellowship.

Eligibility for a second 12-month appointment may be considered based on the Fellow’s performance.

4. Accommodation

Postdoctoral Fellows will be provided accommodation by UNU-IAS. Usage charges other than utilities (electricity, water, gas, telephone, etc.) are as follows:

Single room apartment (for one person)              JPY80,000 or more per month
Twin room apartment (for couples)                     JPY130,000 or more per month

5. Starting Date and Deadline for Applications

The UNU-IAS Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme begins on 1 September and the selected fellows are required to be in Japan by this date.  The deadline for applications for the 2013 Fellowships is 28 February 2013.

The Setsutaro Kobayashi Memorial Fund Accepts an Application for the 30th Foreign Students Research Grant in 2013

Development of international understanding and cooperation is all the more important to achieve a peaceful and harmonious global society, which is the long-term goal of humanity in the 21st century.

Although Japan has dramatically elevated her position in the world in the decades following World War II, it is also true that Japan has not yet fully lived up to the role expected of her. In particular, Japan does not seem to have the best relations with her Asia-Pacific neighbors in terms of politics, economics and culture despite their geographic proximity and long history of cultural interchanges with Japan. In this respect, further mutual understanding and reliance on continued efforts to foster friendship through interchanges among nations have great significance in today's world.

In its Mission Statement, Fuji Xerox Co., Ltd. asserts that it will contribute to the advancement of the global community by continuously fostering mutual trust and enriching diverse culture. Based on this precept and the above-mentioned perception of the current status of Japan, the research grant program was initiated to support young researchers from Asia-Pacific countries/regions who are studying in Japan. The grant is allocated from the Setsutaro Kobayashi Memorial Fund, which was established to commemorate the achievements of the late Setsutaro Kobayashi, who was the first president of Fuji Xerox.

Fuji Xerox hopes that the research grant program contributes to the promotion of mutual understanding of people and harmonious development of the nations or areas in the Asia-Pacific regions.

2. Qualifications for Grant Application

2.1 Research Field

Grants shall be conferred for individual research (not group research) in the field of Humanities (Cultural Science) or Social Sciences, with special emphasis on themes that help deepen the researcher's understanding and awareness of Japanese or Asian/Oceanian society and culture and enhance international interchanges among them in the future.

2.2 Qualifications for Applicants

Applicants shall meet all of the following requirements on the date of both the application deadline and grant subsidization.
  1. Foreign students or researchers from an Asia-Pacific country/area listed below who are currently staying in Japan.
East Asia Korea, China, Taiwan, Mongolia
Southeast Asia Indonesia, Cambodia, Singapore, Thailand, East Timor, Philippines, Brunei, Vietnam, Malaysia, Myanmar, Laos
South Asia India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives
Oceania Australia, New Zealand, Island countries in Oceanian region
  2. Students or researchers who are presently enrolled in a doctorate program (not in a master program) of Japanese universities. Those who already received or will receive doctorate degrees before the issuance date of the grant are not allowed to apply.
  3. Students or researchers who are recommended by their supervising professors or mentors.
3. Grant Particulars

The Kobayashi Fund will provide each grantee with a research grant to be used for expenses (transportation/accommodation for travel, purchase of reference books/archives, etc.) pertaining to the research activities in Japan and Asia-Pacific countries/regions.

Australian Scholarship - AW Howard Memorial Trust

The AW Howard Memorial Trust was established by the Australian Institute of Agricultural Science (now AIAST) in 1964 to commemorate the unique contribution of Amos Howard in the use of subterranean clover as a pasture plant in Australia.
In 1889 Amos William Howard found subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum) growing. He recognised its great promise and was the pioneer of its use in sown pastures.
Through Amos Howard's foresight, devotion and tireless effort, the value of subterranean clover was firmly established and has become the most important pasture plant in Australia. It has multiplied flocks and herds by transforming millions of acres of infertile soils into productive pasture land and increased our harvests by restoring the fertility of large tracts of worn out wheat lands.
The aim of the Trust is to encourage and promote research and investigation in the fields of natural science and social science, including economics which relate to the development, management and use of pastures.

The Trust annually awards the following three grants relating to pasture research:

  • Travel grants are allocated to allow participation in international conferences (noting that the 22nd International Grasslands Congress will be held in Sydney in September 2013). Up to $3,500 each may be provided for travel grants to assist scientists to undertake overseas study tours and attend conferences
  • Research fellowships in the form of top-up postgraduate stipends of $5,000 per annum for up to 3 years
  • Grants-in-aid up to $5,000 to Australian organisations, associations, communities or persons that seek financial aid for projects relating to pasture research.

Two specialist study awards are made biennially or at a frequency determined by the Trust

  • Study awards up to $20,000 for Australian Pastoral Industry Extension Specialists, Consultants and Agribusiness staff.
The Australian Grazing or Rangeland Extension Consultants, Advisers and Agribusiness Specialists Award; and Australian Graziers or Rangeland Pastoralists Award are aimed at study tours either in Australia or overseas to examine successful grazing systems and practices that are perceived to have economic, social and environmental benefits to Australian pastoral industries and rural communities.  They are aimed at promoting producer and adviser excellence and leadership.  The value of each Award may be up to $20,000.
The Amos W Howard Medal and Oration is also awarded biennially by the Trust
