USA Scholarship - LOMA LINDA Students awarded scholarships from Hispanic Alumni

The Hispanic Alumni of Loma Linda (HALL) has awarded scholarships to 34 graduate and undergraduate students enrolled at Loma Linda University.

The scholarships, ranging from $1,000 to $4,000, were presented at the annual HALL Banquet on Oct. 21 at Wong Kerlee International Conference Center.

A total of $82,500 in scholarship money was given out, which is the most ever awarded by HALL in one year.

Roughly 50 Loma Linda University students applied for the scholarship, which was created to assist Hispanic students in their efforts to become the next generation of health care professionals.

In order to be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must be enrolled full time, of Hispanic decent, and must be currently involved with service to the Hispanic community either through their church, school, or personally. Those who are chosen for the awards also exemplify an interest in continuing to serve the needs of the Hispanic community after they finish their education.

Tony Valenzuela, president of HALL and a professor of physical therapy at Loma Linda, said he is extremely thankful to the individuals and organizations who donate funds to make these scholarships possible.

“It is important that these students continue to receive support because they are the future health care professionals of the Hispanic community,” he said in a news release. “Past recipients of this award are now working professionals and are involved in giving back to their community.”

Of the 34 HALL scholarships awarded, 23 were funded by the North American Division of Seventh-day Adventists.

Elder Ernest Castillo, vice president of Hispanic Affairs at the North American Division of Seventh-day Adventists presented the scholarships.

HALL was formed in 1997 with the mission to serve as a support system to the Hispanic student body of LLU while embodying the spirit and principles of Jesus Christ. They have been instrumental in providing more than $215,000 in scholarships to LLU Hispanic students over the past 15 years.
