Australian Government - Rio Tinto NTRB scholarships

The scholarships are administered by the Aurora Project and funded by:

• Rio Tinto plc (RT)
• Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA)
• The Centre for Energy, Petroleum, Mineral Law and Policy (CEPMLP).

The 2005 Report identified problems with the recruitment and retention of lawyers to the native title system and in particular to NTRBs. Both the Aurora Native Title Internship Program and the Australian Government - Rio Tinto NTRB Scholarships are contributing to improved recruitment and retention at NTRBs. Initially funded by Rio Tinto, in 2009 the scholarships were renamed the Australian Government - Rio Tinto NTRB Scholarships in recognition of funding provided by the government.

Structure of the Masters of Law program

The Master of Laws (LLM) in Mineral Law and Policy provides students with:

• knowledge of the current legal, policy and economic issues and challenges in mineral resources investment and development
• a comparison of national laws, regulations and contractual arrangements that currently govern the exploitation of mineral resources
• the opportunity to develop sophisticated legal and policy approaches to mineral resource management and sustainable development within the industry
• the skills required to advise the various stakeholders that participate in the industry.

The core subjects cover:

• both the substantive law relating to mining practice and the international and local context of the industry
• the relationships and conflicts between those who are most affected by mining law and policy - mining companies, the state, indigenous peoples, landowners and the local community.

Program requirements include:

• the three core subjects
• elective subjects to specialisation in human rights, investment law, environmental law and project analysis and mining finance.
• a dissertation, PhD proposal or an industry internship.

Program duration:

• Study commences in September for one year of full time study, made up of three terms.
• An internship either at Rio Tinto or with one of its outside counsel during the August holiday period (with some flexibility around timeframe) may be possible depending on exams, coursework and other research commitments.

The International Selection of ENS - 30 Master scholarships

Each year the ENS organizes an international selection allowing about thirty of the most promising international students to follow a two or three-year course at the ENS. They receive a monthly stipend of approximately 1,000 Euros and benefit from an accommodation on the ENS campus.

30 master scholarships

About 30 foreign students are allocated by the International Selection a monthly scholarship of approximately 1000 euros during two years (in Mathematics and Computer Sciences, a year of undergraduate studies can be added before the Master, depending on the candidate’s profile).

The Selection Prerequisites

The application requirements are the following:

• Providing proof of a non-French nationality
• Being younger than 26 years old on September, 1st, 2013
• Applying only once for this program
• Attending a University outside of France

- In their last year of undergraduate studies (to be validated before September, 1st, 2013)

- Or, in the first year of post-graduate studies (except candidates in Mathematics), provided they enrol in the first year of a Master’s Degree at the ENS on September, 1st, 2013.

The jury in Mathematics will consider in priority candidates enrolled in their 2nd or 3rd year of undergraduate studies.

Exceptionally students who started studying in France after the 1st of August 2012 may apply.

The Selection Process :

• There is no specific program for this international selection. The first step of the admission process is a selection of students according to their records. Then, a committee interviews the candidates in order to assess their capacity of analysis, conceptualization, and their ability to synthesize, in the light of their scientific or literary culture, their intellectual curiosity, and the relevance of their study project.
• Candidates submit the form available on the website between January , 3 and March, 4 2013;
• In May, they will be informed of the results of the preselection process;
• The candidates whose applications have been preselected are individually invited in Paris, where they will take the written tests and then will be interviewed by the examination panel immediately afterwards. The results are published in the few following days. All in all the candidates need to stay up to two weeks;
• Classes start mid-September.

Cursus

In the course of their studies, students work to obtain both a Master in research (an European Diploma) in one of the ENS’s partner Parisian universities, chosen in accordance with their project of study, and the ENS Diploma acknowledging the complementary education received at the ENS.

Health Sciences Honours Scholarship

The Faculty of Health Sciences has established Honours Scholarships to provide financial assistance to undergraduate students undertaking an honours research project in the School of Medicine or the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Faculty of Health Sciences, Flinders University.

BENEFITS

Subject to the availability of funds, there will be five annual scholarships up to the value of $2,500 each. The scholarship is available for the normal duration of the Honours year (one year full-time or two years part-time).

ELIGIBILITY

Applicants must:

• be Australian citizens or permanent residents of Australia; and
• be currently completing or have completed an appropriate undergraduate qualification; or
• be currently completing or have completed 108 units of the Bachelor of Biotechnology (Honours); and
• be commencing an honours program or the fourth year of the Bachelor of Biotechnology (Honours) offered by Flinders University within the Faculty of Health Sciences, in either semester one or semester two of the year of the award; and
• have as their principal supervisor a staff member of, or a holder of full academic status in, the School of Medicine or the School of Nursing and Midwifery.

Graduate Scholarships

Eligibility:

• Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander women,
• Must be undertaking a Graduate Diploma or Certificate at a South Australian university,
• Must not be employed full-time, or on fully-paid study leave,
• Must have a good undergraduate academic record,
• Must not have received this scholarship in 2012.

Postgraduate Research and Coursework Scholarships

Eligibility :

• women and men of any nationality,
• Must be enrolled in a Masters or Doctorate by research at a South Australian university,
• Must have completed one year of postgraduate research,
• Must not be employed full-time, or on fully-paid study leave,
• Must not have received an AFUW-SA Scholarship in this category in 2012.

Department of Further Education, Employment, Science and Technology (DFEEST) :DFEEST Defence Scholarships

The Defence scholarships have been designed to ensure long-term supply of quality skills and a vibrant workforce to meet the needs of defence and defence industry in South Australia.
The scholarship is available to students undertaking a defence-related honours degree or degree with honours at the University of Adelaide; Flinders University; or the University of South Australia. Student must be studying honours in a defence related area such as maths, physical sciences, computer science, information systems or engineering or be able to otherwise able to demonstrate an interest in defence (e.g. through work experience).

BENEFITS

Up to 75 scholarships will be available in South Australia in 2012 to students enrolled in an honours year. The scholarship has a value of $5000 payable in instalments of $2500 each semester.

ELIGIBILITY

Applicants must:

• be Australian citizens
• be eligible for admission to an honours degree or degree with honours at the University of Adelaide; Flinders University; or the University of South Australia.
• be studying in a defence related area, as determined by the university or the student must otherwise be able to demonstrate an interest in defence.
• maintain satisfactory academic progress and full time enrolment.

The scholarship will be awarded based on academic merit as determined by the Grade Point Average of admission to the honours program.

Honours Scholarships

The University of Adelaide offers a wide range of scholarships for students undertaking Honours programs at the University of Adelaide.

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Unit (Wilto Yerlo) offers ongoing academic and pastoral support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.
